J.J. (J.I.) Butler enlisted in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles September 15, 1863 in Bryan County with Capt. J.L. McAllister. He served in Co. A and later in Co. B of the HMR. On February 13, 1864 he was transferred to Co. H of the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Butler was present on roll calls until late June when he became sick. He entered Raleigh General Hospital with acute colitis. On August 12th J.J. Butler died.

Dated March 17, 1865 from the Quarter Master Department, Raleigh, N.C. , is a list of J.J. Butler's effects and it appears to been sent to Co. H 7 Ga Cav. Included : 1 pr pants, 1 vest, 1 shirt, 1 pr drawers, 1 pr shoes, 1 pr socks, 1 hat, 1 blanket, 1 canteen for a total value of $60.00.
