James A. Cason enlisted with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles October 3, 1862 in Bryan County, Ga. He was inducted by Capt. J.L. McAllister. As the numbers increased in the unit, it was split to Co. A and Co. B. Pvt. Cason was assigned to Company B.

With the consolidation of units to make up the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, Cason was transferred to Co. H of the 7th. He was present on all roll calls until October 1864, when he was listed as being in Kitrell Hospital, N.C. On November 18,1864 Pvt. James Cason was issued clothing.
