James H. Durrance enlisted November 6, 1863 in Bryan County with Capt. J.P. Hines. Pvt. Durrance was with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. B until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. H, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

On the March/April 1864 roll, Pvt. Durrance was listed as present yet was absent for 7 days just prior to moving to Northern Virginia. On June 11, '64 he was captured near Trevillian Station, Va. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. on June 20th and on July 25th was transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. James H. Durrance was released on July 7, 1865. His description at that time follows: residence, Millen, Ga.; complexion, florid; hair, light; eyes, blue; height, 5 ft. 7 inches.
