William J. Harn enlisted July 6, 1863 in Bryan County with Capt. J.L. McAllister. Pvt. Harn served in Co. B, Hardwick Mounted Rifles until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. H, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Harn was captured at Trevillian Station, Va. June 11, 1864. He was sent to Fortress Monroe, Va. June 20th then on July 25th transferred to Elmira Prison, N.Y.

Pvt. William J. Harn died November 6, 1864 of chromic diarrhoea. He was buried at Elmira in grave # 850.
