J.J. Callaway enlisted September 1863 at Savannah in an unknown unit. He served in Co. I, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry which wasn't established until February 13, 1864.

Pvt. Callaway left command the latter part of January 1865 to take care of some important business at home. He was cut off from command and was ordered to report to Gnl. Wofford in Atlanta.

J.J. Callaway surrendered with Gnl. Wofford's command May 12, 1865 at Kingston, Ga.
