James H. Harroll enlisted May 13, 1862 in Augusta. He was with the 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. A and later Co. C until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. I, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Harroll was present on roll calls until June 18, 1864 and from that time he was in a hospital until November 9th when he returned to duty. He was hospitalized again in Jackson Hospital at Richmond on November 18th, this time with syphilis.

On December 9, 1864, Harroll deserted.
