Rufus C. Heggie enlisted in Cobb County with Lt. Glover. Cpl. Heggie served in Co. D, 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. I, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Cpl. Heggie's records indicate that he was present on all roll calls through October 1864. He received a clothing issue in the late fall of '64.

On April 12, 1865, Cpl. Heggie was captured at Salisbury, N.C. He was forwarded to Louisville, Ky. on April 29th. Then on May 4th was received at Camp Chase, Ohio.

Cpl. Rufus C. Heggie was released on June 13, 1865 at Camp Chase after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Upon departure he told that his place of residence was Columbia, Ga. His description was: hair, dark; eyes, dark; height, 5 ft. 10 inches; age, 19.
