John Kirk served in 24th Battalion, Georgia Cavalry, Co. D until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. I, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Kirk was wounded at Trevillian Station, Va. with v.s. right shoulder. He was admitted to hospital June 13, '64 and furloughed July 12th for 60 days. In the late fall of '64 he received a clothing issue which included; 1 pair pants, 1 pair drawers, 2 pair of shoes and 2 pair socks.
