Emmitt Thomas Downs of Bryan County, Georgia at the age of 29 joined J.L. McAllister's Hardwick Mounted Rifles on May 6, 1862 and was later transferred to Company K, 7th Georgia Cavalry on February 13, 1864 when it was formed.

Pvt. Emmitt Downs served in Co. K., 7th Georgia Calvary until the end of the war.

Included with his pension application were signed affidavits by Sgt. James B. Brown and A. J. Brown of Co. H. who were also from Bryan Co and stated they served with him.
