J.W. Latimer enlisted July 31, 1863 in Bryan County with Capt. J.L. McAllister. Cpl. Latimer was with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

21 year old Cpl. Latimer was sick, in General Hospital at Danville, Va. some time in June '64, diagnosed as having typhoid fever. He was issued a sick furlough to Georgia beginning July 2nd.

On the September/October roll Latimer was listed as present without a horse.
