Samuel S. Ledger (Leger), born in South Carolina in 1822, married Martha and in Alabama they had three children at the ages of 12, 9 and 7 in 1860.

After moving to Bryan County, Georgia, Samuel enlisted April 3, 1862 in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles receiving $24.40 for the use of his horse. He was in the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Pvt. Ledger was listed as having been present at roll calls through mid October when he was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with pneumonia. Again he was hospitalized on January 19, 1865 with chronic rheumatism.
