Heyward A. Lester (Haywood)(H.E.), enlisted August 4, 1863 in Bryan County with J.L. McAllister. Pvt. Lester was with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

Records show that he was present on roll calls through June '64. In July he received a 30 day sick furlough from July 17th through August 14th. The September/October roll had him as present without a horse.

In December 1864, 200 men of the 7th left Virginia to procure horses in Georgia. Pvt. Lester was captured December 21, '64 at Savannah. On the 24th he was admitted in what had become a U.S. hospital and was diagnosed as debility from mias. dis. Again, on January 19, '65, the diagnosis was debilitas from mias (miasma - poisonous fumes or germs in the air).

Pvt. Lester was received at Fort Delaware on March 12, 1865 and was released June 16, 1865. His description upon release follows: residence, Burke County Ga.; complexion, dark; hair, dark; eyes, hazel; height, 5 feet 4 1/2 inches.
