John Lowther enlisted April 3, 1862 in Bryan County with Capt. J.L. McAllister. Pvt. Lowther was with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.
Pvt. Lowther was present at roll calls through June '64. On June 30th he was admitted in Jackson Hospital at Richmond diagnosed with febris thph (typhoid). After a stay through July 14th, he had a sick furlough of 30 days.
