J.W. McDowell enlisted August 10, 1863 in Macon with Lt. Col. Harris. Sgt. McDowell was with the Hardwick Mounted Rifles, Co. A until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. K, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry.

When moving into the 7th Sgt. McDowell retained his rank. He was captured June 11, 1864 at Louisa Courthouse, Va. The sergeant was sent to Fortress Monroe on June 20th then on to Point Lookout, Md.

Sgt. J.W. McDowell was paroled at Point Lookout and transferred for exchange on January 17, '65. He was received at James River, Va. On January 25th he was listed as with the 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry again.
